The state of Assam, which lies in the North Eastern part of India, has gained a decent amount of fame and popularity due to it’s premium quality of tea. Its naturally beautiful, and its pleasant climate makes it the ideal location for growing tea.
The many high growth areas produce malty flavored brew, which is enjoyed all over the world. Here are some of the most famous producing areas of the state; Towkok, Manjushree, Mangalam, Nahorhabi, and Meleng.
Towkok is situated on the banks of the Towkak River, is one of the most famous in the state. The garden covers over 3,000 hectares, including a government forest reserve. It is not uninhabited, as it has become a home to local wild life. It is quite large, and is divided into three different estates.
Towkok is known for the production of “orthodox” and CTC during it’s first flush. This can be found for sale on many different online shops, shipping all over the world. Towkok is accessible to the people who care for the estates by airways, roads, and railroads. It even has it’s own tram trolley line!
This particular estate is known for it’s architectural beauty, and picturesque view. Like Towkok, Manjushree is very well accessible by main roads and airports.
The garden itself stretches across 403 hectares. Manjushree is also located near the city of Sonari, in the Sibsagar District of Assam.
Known for it’s unique bush plantation, Mangalam stretches over 117 hectares. The garden also produces orthodox tea and CTC tea.
These types of teas can go for very high prices in the market. In fact, this tea is exceptionally high in demand with the German market.
Nahorhabi is actually named after the “Nahor” tree. The estate is spread over 650 hectares, with one side covered by dense forests. It is one of the first in the state to receive ISO 9002 certification.
This might be due to the fact that Nahorhabi produces and markets very high quality CTC teas, as well as traditional teas.
The traditional production process is the hallmark of this garden, so the management carries out regular plantation of trees to maintain and ensure ecological balance.
Named after the “Meleng River”, and is one of the oldest in Assam. It was founded in the 1800’s this garden now has over 1700 workers maintaining the land.
It is widely known for growing “golden tippy” ortho brew, which is popular for it’s rich, malty taste. This has helped the garden earn many prestigious awards.
Adequate precipitation and wonderful weather make this state one of the best areas for plantation and production. Every year, these areas produce a wide variety of high demand tea, to be shared all over the world!
