What does Lyme disease testing involve? ELISA tests detect antibodies against the Lyme bacteria. If a patient is negative, they do not need any further testing. However, if they are positive, they must take a Western blot test to confirm their diagnosis. Unfortunately, 50% of ELISA tests are false-negative, which is why many people never get tested for Lyme disease. Testing for Lyme disease can be difficult because it can cause many symptoms, which can be mistaken for other illnesses. Because Lyme disease is not a life-threatening illness, antibiotics are often prescribed. In the meantime, you should avoid going into wooded areas with tall grass and wear long pants and socks to reduce the risk of infection. Insect repellents that contain DEET should also be worn. You should never ignore symptoms of Lyme disease.

The CDC recommends two tiers of serologic testing for Lyme disease. The first tier is the EIA test, followed by the second level – the WB. The results of both tests must be positive or equivocal. Nonstandard serologic tests may only use one tier of tests, or may use different interpretation criteria. For example, an EIA test with a lower sensitivity or fewer bands than WB, could be a false-negative.
